ASDA Members kicked off the year with a week full of events focused on the many aspects of ASDA including Advocacy, Service, Professional Development, Ethics, and a little bit of fun. The week was a success, filled with all things ASDA. Our members certainly caught the ASDA Fever. See details of the events below.

Stay tuned for ASDA Fever Week for the 2017-2018 school year!

MDA Bagel Breakfast & Lunch Learn

January 13th, 2015

ASDA Fever Week kicked off on Tuesday with a Bagel Breakfast sponsored by MDA in the forum. Later in the afternoon, the MDA Legislative team joined students for a Lunch & Learn presentation, “Update on Dental Legislature.” Topics included midlevel providers, student debt, and water fluoridation. Students were also coached on how to advocate effectively. With ASDA Student Lobby Day in Lansing and Washington D.C. quickly approaching, students gained great techniques to help them in their lobbying efforts.

Professional Development Workshop

March 15, 2013

What first steps do you take when you step out of dental school and into practice? This was one of the key questions addressed at ASDA’s Professional Development Workshop. Presenters Carly Warden and Andrew Grillo passed on information presented by Dr. Mike Meru at the National Leadership Conference in a presentation named “Marketing your Practice on a Budget and Building Your Personal Brand”. Students learned of resources available to them pertaining to creating a practice name, logo, website, marketing material and much more within an economical budget. Also during the session, members were led through an madlib-like exercise in which they created a “Hedgehog Concept” and a practice slogan based on their own beliefs and practices. Overall, the response from students was significant, many claiming they were interested to hear about topics that are not covered much while in school.

Community Service Day

April 22, 2013

Students joined forces on Wednesday afternoon of ASDA Fever Week during their flex time to serve a great cause. ASDA sent members to Ronald McDonald House to cook a meal for the guests of the house. Community Service Chairs, Josh Smith and Angelique Teasley led the force of 10 volunteers in buying food, preparing a meal, and ultimately serving it to the grateful families at the home.

SPEA Ethics Workshop

ASDA’s partner organization, Student Professionalism and Ethics Association, geared up during ASDA Fever Week to offer a workshop where students discussed three ethically questionable scenarios. James Perman, SPEA’s President, led the discussion on the scenarios that ranged from respecting the privacy of a suicidal patient to withholding the removal of braces until payment was received. Members were able to engage in questions and ask the opinion of Ethics experts that were in attendance.

Trivia Night

What would ASDA Fever Week be without a good old fun night out? ASDA members attended Trivia Night on Thursday Night at Arbor Brewing Company. The 50 members fit perfectly in the backroom, and teams of 4 answered challenging questions in four rounds of trivia. The competition was fierce, but ultimately one team came out on top, winning a gift card to ABC and bragging rights.

Ice Cream Social

I scream, you scream, we all scream for…. ASDA! ASDA Fever Week wrapped up with an ice cream social in the Atrium. ASDA wanted to thank its members for their participation and support throughout the week. Whether passing through or gathering to mingle, students enjoyed the ice cream sundaes between heading to classes and clinic.
